How to Choose a Commercial Electrical Contractor

Accreditations, insurance, experience and aftercare: the questions to ask before you appoint an electrical contractor for your business.

Choosing an electrical contractor is one of the most important decisions you will make for your business premises. The wrong choice can mean delays, unsafe work and expensive corrections. The right one gives you a partner who keeps your site safe, compliant and running for years to come.

Whether you are planning a new installation, a lighting upgrade or a maintenance contract, these are the questions we suggest asking.

Are They Accredited?

Look for a contractor registered with a recognised scheme such as the NICEIC. Approved contractors are assessed regularly on the standard of their work and their technical knowledge, and they can certify the work they carry out.

For health and safety, schemes such as SafeContractor show that a contractor’s policies and procedures have been independently checked. If you are installing solar PV or battery storage, MCS certification matters too, because it is usually needed to receive export payments under the Smart Export Guarantee.

Do They Have Commercial Experience?

Commercial and industrial electrical work is very different from domestic work. Three phase distribution, large scale containment, high bay lighting, machine supplies and working inside live, operational buildings all demand specific experience.

Ask for case studies and references from businesses like yours, and look at the projects the contractor has delivered. A contractor who has worked in factories, warehouses and offices will already understand the pressures your business faces.

How Will They Manage Disruption?

Your business needs to keep running while the work is carried out. A good contractor will plan power shutdowns carefully, offer evening and weekend working where needed and keep you informed throughout. Ask how they have handled similar work in occupied buildings, and what happens if the programme changes.

Is Their Paperwork in Order?

Before work starts, you should receive risk assessments and method statements for the job, along with proof of appropriate insurance. When the work is finished, you should receive the correct certification, whether that is an Electrical Installation Certificate, a Minor Works Certificate or an Electrical Installation Condition Report (EICR).

Without the right certificates, you may struggle to prove compliance to insurers, landlords or buyers in future.

Can They Support You After Handover?

The relationship should not end on completion day. Ask whether the contractor offers planned maintenance, reactive support and compliance testing. A contractor who already knows your installation can respond faster and more effectively when you need them, and can keep track of renewal dates for you.

Do They Communicate Clearly?

A detailed, itemised proposal tells you exactly what is included and avoids surprises later. Be wary of vague prices with little detail, and ask how any unforeseen work will be agreed before it goes ahead.
